A Review on Jules Moigniez Bronze Eagle Sculptures
Jules Moigniez was a well-known French animalier of the 19th century who was known for his realistic portrayal of animals. His sculptures of small-scale sculptures of animals were predominantly mass produced in France and then sold to England and Scotland for his bird sculptures with imports to the United States happening towards the end of his lifetime. More than half of his bronze statues output which was cast through the lost wax process, was sold to the United Kingdom with many of his customers being middle income earners.
Jules Moigniez was born on May 28, 1835 in Oise, France. As he experimented casting beautiful animalier sculptures at a young age, he enjoyed the ability to produce them on a large scale when his father bought a metal foundry. This helped him in his career to get ahead of his contemporaries and removed the heavy costs and burden which came about for the other animalier sculptors who were forced to fork out their savings to build their own metal foundries. From a young age, Jules Moigniez created some of the finest animalier sculptures with a profound ability to sculpt bird sculptures. His bird sculptures especially his eagle sculptures, some of which we feature here in this blog post, are reportedly his finest.
His penchant to sculpt animal sculptures like dogs and horses from an early age, earned him a well-deserved reputation. He received positive feedback for his innate ability to capture the finite details of his animalier castings which he then exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon under the tutelage of his mentor Paul Comolera. According to records, Moigniez exhibited thirty works at the Paris Salon during his forty years (1855-92) as an animalier sculptor. His castings especially his bird sculptures were heavily gilded with patina and are known to be the heavily sought after by collectors. By the time he died in 1894 around his birthday, his legacy extended to the United States through a jewelry shop in Pennsylvania which advertised the works of other well-known French sculptors like Grégoire and Carrier-Belleuse.
