The Spirit of Ecstasy Today

Today, the Spirit of Ecstasy figurine, after several remakes, is poised ready to brace the wind as her gown is brushed back looking like wings, one leg slightly set forward, body tucked low, eyes focused eagerly ahead, "a true goddess of speed". The beautiful image of the Spirit of Ecstasy of the modern era, has been digitally sculpted which has aided in delivering a more contemporary and attractive view of the lady figurine with much dynamism and commanding presence accrued to her. There is also a great display of elegant features and expression which has led to more focus and serenity expressed by the sculpture. These finely crafted details have been enhanced in comparison to the previously christened figure used in the Rolls Royce bonnet known as “The Whisper “. That figurine of the past previously stood with her feet together, legs seen straight up and tilting at the waist, and this figurine has a deep history, a product of two star-crossed lovers.

The Spirit of Ecstasy of the Past

Prior to 1910, the early Rolls Royce motor car featured a radiator cap on its hood/bonnet but this changed by 1910 when it became clear to have a classy ornament on the hood/bonnet that owners of the Rolls could identify with. This arose when Rolls Royce management became alarmed that customers were affixing their own ornaments to the hood/bonnet of the luxury car which was considered inappropriate. It was this inappropriate use of ornaments on the motor car that caused the managing director of Rolls-Royce to commission the use of a suitable figurine that would be both dignified and graceful. It was this move that caused the sculptor Charles Sykes to take a more involved view of what should preside on the hood/bonnet and Sykes was asked to produce a mascot which bore “the spirit of the Rolls-Royce, namely, speed with silence, absence of vibration, the mysterious harnessing of great energy and a beautiful living organism of superb grace…”

However, the inspiration for drawing that mascot for the Rolls Royce, as stated earlier, bears a past of the taboo love between a nobleman known as Lord Montagu, and a woman of very modest means, Eleanor Velasco Thornton.

Lord Montagu of Beaulieu was a powerful ally and friend of King Edward, and founder and editor of The Car Illustrated magazine. His secretary was Eleanor Thornton whom he fell in love with. When Lord Montagu commissioned Charles Sykes to create an ornament for the Rolls-Royce bonnet/hood, Sykes used Eleanor Thornton as his subject. Thornton in turn, eager to commemorate her secret love with Lord Montagu, agreed to act as the model for the Roll-Royce ornament and Sykes then crafted The Whisper which was a silver-plated figurine of Thornton in fluttering robes, pressing a finger against her lips – to symbolize the secrets of the love between Montagu and her. Today, the Spirit of Ecstasy figurine for the Rolls is typically made of stainless steel, but silver and gold-plated versions can still be ordered. Sometimes, customers can order diamond studded Spirit of Ecstasy figurines to grace the bonnet/hood of the Rolls Royce. It is a preference that has led to an undeniable agreement that the Spirit of Ecstasy lady figurine is a true mystery, an evocative figure that has sensationalized the use of the Rolls Royce taking it to new heights with the precision and grace of a luxury car unsurpassed.
