There is so much character and depth that is presented by this handsome marble sculpture, the Dying Gladiator, originally hand carved by the eighteenth century French sculptor, Pierre Julien. The Dying Gladiator is an object of neoclassicism and highlights a young and bearded man seated upon the ground, naked except for a drapery across his midriff. He supports his weight with his left hand, which clutches a laurel crown, and resting his right arm upon his circular bossed shield, partly covered by the swag of drapery, he looks down towards the ground and his laurel crown. His sword lies on the ground, beneath his right leg. Julien captures the pain and pensive expression of the gladiator as his life ebbs slowly away, all entombed with his mingling sensations of triumph and regret, memories and their extinction.
This is a beautifully hand carved marble sculpture that will resonate with beauty and depth for a garden, home or estate park.
