Gaius Julius Caesar was a statesman and dictator who was born in July 100 B.C. He was a member of the First Triumvirate and had led the Roman army in the Gallic wars and was said to have defeated his political rival Pompey in a civil war. After assuming control of the Roman government in 49 B.C., Caesar began social and governmental reform which included land reforms for his veterans. He was later assassinated in 44 BC.
