Highlight the beauty of Frederic Remington’s The Cheyenne considered to be one of the most important works in the Western American art collection. Beautifully detailed, Remington pays heed to the Cheyenne tribe and leaves the nature of the rider on the horse to the imagination of its owner. There are so many reasons why this rider appears to be in a rush. He could be, for instance, in pursuit of a prey and calling upon his fellow men to join him with the chase, or perhaps this Cheyenne rider could be fleeing because he is chased and is the prey.
The Cheyenne was Remington’s sixth sculpture and his most daring design. Unlike other artists who experimented with placing equine subjects at least with one foot on the ground, Remington did a daredevil stunt to have all four feet of his subject off the ground so that the galloping horse “burns the air,” as described by Remington in a letter to his friend and author of western novels, Owen Wister. In doing so, Remington captures the horse mid-stride to create the illusion of movement.
