Pelicans hold a lot of meaning in the Christian faith and some churches have painted images of pelicans on the glasses of their building as a mark of a Christian symbol. In the event it is unable to find food for its young, the pelican is said to pierce its breast and feed its blood to its young. This in turn became a symbol of Christ sacrificing himself for mankind.
