A museum quality piece, Salammbô chez Matho (Matho kneeling before Salammbo) is a sculpture that was created by Theodore Riviere based on Gustave Flaubert's novel that was published in 1862, Salammbô. The story in the novel comes with a setting time period of 241-238 B.C. It tells of the war between Carthage and its mercenaries in revolt. The Libyan Mathô, the chief of the barbarian soldiers, fell in love with Salammbô, the daughter of his Carthaginian enemy Hamilcar Barca. Here, Mathô dies at the feet of his love crying: "I love you! I love you!".  Salammbô is seen here dressed regally and wearing a pointed head-dress, Mathô is seen here kneeling with his right leg outstretched, embracing her passionately, on a mound base.
